Document Summary

All healthy families resemble each other; each unhealthy family is unhealthy in its own way (tolstoy). Family studies- genetics of abnormal behaviour in general- most diseases are heterogeneous and tolstoy"s quote- typically what is found when you look at how genes affect diff. forms of abnormal behaviour. Did snips(snp-single nucleotide polymorphism)- which means they looked at specific gene loci. Looked at this in over 100,000 patients from 20 diff. countries- massive study, looked at whole genome to see if they could see distinctive diff. in patients. Found that there could talk about snp inheritance for about 25% of adhd and 20% of schizo. Compare that to the heredity i showed you at the beginning of genetics- with twin studies you get a hereditary effect of like 70%. But when you actually look at genes, you do not find anything close to what twin studies are suggesting are involved in schizophrenia and you see overlap in terms of genes.
