Temporal precedence (series of events): still hard to distinguish between causation or symptom of disease e. g. the change in neural response in depression. Comparing two or more groups at the same point of time. Cons: hard for temporal precedence (process of proceeds or causes) Screening out people without any disorder may not be representative. May have also different social background, iq from disorder prone population. Statistical control of variables is often controversial e. g. using iq as statistical control leads to creating comparative groups. Iq may be a protecting factor for schizophrenia. People with disorder try to recall what preceded it. Problems with recall, threshold for identifying disorder, recall is influenced by current mood state. Sometimes uses archival data, school records, home videos. Can"t control the quality of data (e. g. home videos are not representative of the patient life) Hard to understand if the signs are causes or early symptoms e. g. schizophrenia in children may have different symptoms from adults.
