Document Summary

Lecture 13: the impact of rewards on intrinsic motivation. The second half of the course focuses on how others try to motivate us. The first half of the course focused too much on success. Review the impact of rewards and controls on intrinsic motivation. Consider how to maintain and enhance intrinsic motivation for reading (reading novel as kids for example) Why do people stop pursuing activities that formerly seemed to be highly self-rewarding: e. g. childhood sport, musical instrument, reading for pleasure. Somewhere down the line the intrinsic motivation gets destroyed": examples, childhood sport, profs intrinsic motivation for bball, musical instrument: ppl who were incredibly interested in playing music. Something happens to our reading, we read less out of interest. Deep engaged reading becomes less prominent as we get older as students we read just for our classes or mindlessly read stuff on the internet, no longer read for pleasure: there"s lots of positive aspects about reading.
