Document Summary

An instant action plan comes with setting a goal. Ny resolutions: goal setting, self change attempt, likely failure. Predictors for ny resolutions: desire to change, readiness, self efficacy. Study recruited 300 adults between christmas and new years through advertisements asking for people who plan on setting new year"s resolutions. Measured desire to change, readiness, self efficacy. Asked why they think they failed, 4 main reasons: Self control= the capacity to alter or override one"s typical way of responding. Ingredients of successful self control: standards, monitoring, strength. Standards; abstract notion of what you want to achieve/avoid. The standard of what is considered healthy/unhealthy/etc. Goals need to be consistent and not in conflict with one another. Monitor your behaviour in relations to those standards and then make adjustments. Strength needed to exercise the willpower to follow through evidence that each of us has a limited amount of self control resources, its possible to exhaust this amount of self control available.
