Psyc 532: lecture 6 reconsolidation lecture: memory consolidation. In an attempt to control the seizures, in 1953, william scoville removed parts of hm"s mediotemporal lobes, including large parts of both hippocampi. Scoville & milner 1957 - landmark paper. Retrograde amnesia after trauma shows a time gradient. Patient hm had nearly complete anterograde amnesia (inability to form new memories) Graded retrograde amnesia recent memories severely damaged, remote memories intact. Hippocampus critically involved in retention of current experience. The observed ribot gradient gave rise to the notion of memory consolidation: Why there are complementary memory systems in the hippocampus and neocortex james mcclelland & al 1995. Newly acquired memories depend on the hippocampus. Somehow, memories are copied from hippocampus to other areas, probably neocortex. Questions about past television programs, then electric shocks (for whatever treatment they needed it) Then they are asked the same questions again. Hc learns quickly; nc is a slow learner.
