Document Summary

Asrama literally means stage of life or place of dwelling . Idealized structure for the life of a dvija. Four asramas mentioned in the dharmasutras and dharmasastras (texts on ethnic law). There are 4 asramas: brahmacarya, grhastha, vanaprastha, samnyasa. Theoretically every dvija man passes through each step. A stage of life referring to childhood and away from being sexually active. Meant to spent most of his time studying. Leave their parents and live with a guru who gives them education. A semi- retirement phase where the children have grown up and a time where providing for the wife and children is over. Move with their wives into cabins into the woods (huts) All material attachment including the attachment with the wife is done away with. One is supposed to renounce everything and live a solitary existence and 100% focus is on spiritual matters. Note: this is not what happened with every man in indian society.
