RELG 331 Lecture 8: RELG331 Lecture 8
Document Summary
In judaism there is a couple of opposite theories when it comes to the relationship of the jewish community with the non-jewish community. We saw that there is a strong feeling that the jews are the chosen people, this can lead to particularism. This can be balanced off that the jews are chosen is because they have a role to play within the broader world. The covenant with noah is considered to continuously be relevant (not cancelled by the covenant with abraham) You should not only live your life when you"re exiled but you should pray for your citizens because in their prosperity you also prosper. There"s a lot of material that sets the stage for arguing to construct a philosophical basis for jewish involvement in the broader world. In the jewish tradition, like in most legal tradition, there are always 2 parts: what texts say, the lived experience of the people.
