Tolstoy: 1828 1910, landed gentry very wealthy. Stops writing his journals during this time: 1870s: anna karenina, has a spiritual crisis: changing views on life and its meaning. Moves further and further away from orthodoxy, which causes him to be excommunicated later in life: 1880s: late novellas and essays, becomes more and more famous, and he is very uncomfortable with that. Idealizes and admires peasants, but his wife isn(cid:495)t into it: 1894: the king of god is within you: about pacifist views, which later have an influence in ghandi and thus martin luther king. Very influential: 1901: excommunicated, partly because of his 1899 work resurrection. Is by now a world celebrity: people do pilgrimages to see him: his marriage is very rocky his wife and himself have journal wars. They shared all of their journals together, so she begins to write (cid:494)the truth(cid:495) about him in her own journals in response to his.
