Latin America: Spanish colonizers found complex civilization, but still destroyed them  Inca empire fall in 1492 Same occurrence in Africa – colonizers found cities with 300 thousand people in some cases, but  they were still considered uncivilized.  1500­1850 Major countries wanted black gold (slaves) slaved got shipped to the U.S. to harvest Tabaco and cotton  Portugal and Spain took their slaves to South America to run their plantations. They killed all the  indigenous people so they had to import slaves Africa held lost of Gold, Sliver and Ivory  Asia: conquered much later because it was far away from the west  mid 1800 when colonizers went into china  Consequences of Colonization: Decimation of the indigenous population (by war and disease) Destruction of their culture (indigenous)  Establishment and development of cities (not based on the appropriate economy  Political instability (when the colonizers left)  National boundaries were established by the colonizers on the basis on what was convenient  They do not have a national urban city (a balanced urban environment) ▯  rank­size rule (the  largest city is twice the size of the second and 3 times the size of the third)  Primate city (when a nation is dominated by one large city)▯ everything that is central to that  country’s economy is based in one city ex: Mexico city is 6x as large as Guadalajara  Over urbanization: that there are too many people living in cites for the economy in that city  (there is not enough jobs) too many people for the industrial base  Server poverty – crime – political  Spiraling populations  Demographic transition theory: explains the growth of world populations (p33) Birth rate stays high Death rate decreases  What brings down the birth rate:  government policies (1 kid policy in China) Birth control Later marriage  The opportunity for economic advancements  (View p 34) As technology increases, the death rate will come down ad cleanliness becomes a priority  What should be done??
