Amartya sen came up with the idea of substantive freedoms, the capabilities to choose a life one has reason to value . We have unfreedoms in some places, because while we have freedoms they aren"t equal. Shared society: build a universally beneficial society which is not owned by one but all. Addressing inequality is a precondition for promoting human development. We need a more shared society through social policy. Sharing of information and free access through wikipedia, creative commons, google talk, and viber. Thailand is scaling back to the sufficient economy. Goal is for everybody to be self sufficient. Bhutan now measures gross national happiness which emphasizes equality, culture, material and spiritual development, sustainability, and good governance. Index of sustainable welfare (isew) or genuine progress indicator (gpi) Gdp counts value from timber for example but gpi actually includes the costs of logging. Growth needs new market to survive, so it deliberately creates new needs and dependencies.
