SOCI 365 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Intercultural Competence, Stereotype, Nonverbal Communication
Lecture 13 - SOCI 365
Reading 1:
• Gay communities in developed countries doing well in socio economic
status. However still high risk behaviors in this community. So, put aside
poverty, still dynamics of high risk behaviors.
• Those who stay in school have higher sexual activity (more likely to have
contact with opposite sex) school structure for sexual activity?
Case study in Kenya
• Literacy and information in rural schools in particular
• Need to implement program, but look at the socio-cultural context
• For example AIDS in Chile conclusion was that you cannot pretend that
this culture / tribe is not part of the Chile society
Talk about race and culture today
Exercise: talk about your culture, school, neighborhood, friends, family
Race and culture
• White women have the longest lifespan in the US.
• African American men have the shortest life span which is about 69 years.
Why is there such a big difference?
• African Americans are more likely to hide HIV positive diagnosis and less
likely to seek early treatment, more likely to take part in risk taking
behaviors.
• Disparity in mental health especially with African Americans.
• There is even more disparity with foreign people (stay away from a variety of
medial services).
• Doctor less likely to prescribe HIV medication because some evidence that if
they do, will not go through the treatment to the end. Stereotyping patients
leads to misdiagnosis. Medical community especially doctors have a white
Anglo-Saxon culture (privatr club) this creates gaps and racial disparities
Outcome:
• we need to have a better understanding of each community in health care
• a set of policies that makes professionals work effectively in a cross cultural
context
• need to adapt to cultural differences and culturally unique needs
• take into account cultural context location, socio economic status, race,
ethnicity, etc.
• Cultural competence for one population does not translate to cultural
competence for another
• Promotes and advances cultural diversity and uniqueness
