September 14: when sociologists talk about gender, they are not talking about something biological. The same person can perform gender differently in different institutional contexts. Institutions demand different kinds of gender performances: social constructionist theory takes evidence from social life. It"s how you know that there is variation in gender. We are able to understand why certain people have more power, resources and why certain people are oppressed. We have to understand the unequal positioning of bodies. Development = gdp growth: e. lucas, development economist. Gdp per capita helps tell us how wealthy / poor a country is. Lucas was using an income-based measure of gdp. Hdi is an aggregate of gdp, life expectancy, education. Sen talks about how we introduce things that matter for human welfare and how these factors will introduce different rankings. Takes into account how unequal a society is. Gdp growth happens through ef ciency improvements in the production process.
