Globalisation and the gay movement around the world. Globalisation of a western gay identity with different circuits of transmission (eg: aids workers) He accepts the role of economics in developing sexual identities but says we have to recnogize the existing forces that existed before the west. There isn"t a unidirectional spread of the model of sexuality: particular places and political economies already had their models. Altman seems to think the most important social forces impacting gay identity have to do with globalisation and transnational processing. When you look at what"s going on on the ground, people who claim that they"re gay are talking more about their country"s history. She"s encouraging us to think about more globalised social forces including local culture. She talks about kinship: you can identify as gay but also want to consider things like family, kinship, taking care of parents etc.
