Positivism: based on the belief that we can study humans in the same way that we study the natural world sociological positivist belief that there are natural laws that can be used to understand human behaviour. Biggest difference between classical and positivist thought: human decisions were not the product of free will according to positivists. We did not choose to commit crime, we had biological innate faults, constitutional inferiority or sickness. Thomas kuhn - argues that at different times, we considered different sciences normal. Remedies: for classical, swift, certain, graduated punishment, for positivist: treatmen, separation, elimnation. Constitutional inferiority: a weakness, or something lacking that makes the individual more likely to be deviant. Determinism: people are born criminal and there"s nothing that can be done. The application of darwin;s theory of survival to social behaviour.
