Document Summary
Core of sociology: recognizes that our social relations shape us in very influential ways. Definition: the process through which people are taught to be proficient members of a society . Often described as the process by which people learn culture (i. e. norms, values, perspectives, knowledge, language, religion, etc. ) Sociologists generally break them down into primary (people who raise you) and. Primary socializers very influential- where you pick up language skills. Socialization is on the nurture side of the nature-nurture debate. Nurture: sociology emphasizes how we are shaped by our social environment. Nature: suggests that our genes make us who we are. That said, humans are biological creatures, so sociologists cannot deny that our biology affects us. When forced to consider our biology, most sociologists look at common biology instead of using biology to divide people like eugenics. Most commonly, sociologists suggest our nature is nurture. Social animals require some way of coordinating actions to allow everyone to live together peacefully.
