Theories involve ideas about things that are important. We have to turn these ideas into something that can be observed. Makes a large difference to the association between gender and earnings - association is stronger using the annual earnings vs. hourly earnings. Women tend to work fewer hours of paid work, therefore men work more hours of paid work and end up with larger annual earnings. Income is not the same as earnings (includes the stock market, etc. ) Operational issues that is associated with something so self evident. Marx had a grand theory of class - the distinguishing element in class is the ownership or non-ownership of the means of production. Population is made up of people who don"t own the means of production (mostly proletariat) Prof owns the means of production because his pension allows him to invest his money and allow for a form of ownership.
