What is prejudice: social - psychological perspective (gordon allport, antipathy, hostility, hatred, intolerance or aggressiveness towards out-group members, located within individual, result of innate dispositions, certain personality types (eg. authoritarian), and social experience. Relationship b/w group stereotypes + prejudice: stereotype = generalizations about the average characteristics of members of a group, attributes or salient characteristics of a group. Professors: cognitive source of prejudice, stereotypes both engender and reinforce affect. What is discrimination: unequal treatment of individuals or groups on the basis of some social characteristic, many forms: gender, class, sexual orientation, disability status, age, race, ethnicity, language, religion, weight, mental health status. Racial discrimination: treatment v. effect: differential treatment (intentional) Unequal treatment on basis of race resulting in disadv. for a racial group. Unequal treatment not based on race but on some other factor, which ultimately results in disadvantage for a racial group: eg. stricter sentencing for dealing / usage of crack v. cocaine.
