Document Summary

Reading 1: no turning back: the history of feminism and the future of women. 2 reasons for feminism: emergence of capitalism disrupted the family relations and enhanced men"s economic opportunities while making the women their dependents, new individual rights and representative governments alongside capitalism extended privileges only to men. Feminism emerged and demanded equal opportunities for education, economics, and political opportunities. Since 1970, feminism has been spreading globally and continues to do so. Some focus solely on women, others incorporate the politics of race, nationality, class, and religion. Conflict over the political meaning of the word feminism split the women"s movement for over half a century. At first it linked women"s authority with property and educational rights and authority for women to motherhood. Later on, the maternal argument was rejected and the argument was placed on the common identity of women with men for the opportunity for equal rights.
