Applied Medical Anthropology  Refers to the application of anthropological knowledge to further the goals of health care providers. How?  Improve doctor/patient communication  Make recommendations about culturally appropriate health interventions  Develop educational programs TODAY: GLOBALIZATION, HEALTH AND DISEASE Globalization:  Greater ease of travel and migration – development of the commercial airline  Increased cross-cultural contact and interconnections  Proliferation of multinational companies- companies that relocate out of economic centres (Disney etc.,), this creates international connections, new job opportunities  Development of MEDICAL PLURALISM – globalization is directly related to this- a mix of western healing practices Example of Medical Pluralism: the Sherpa of Nepal- in textbook The Sherpa of Nepal  Ethnic group of 150,000  Animal herders, small businesses, mountain guides for climbers and tourist industry – most live in small communities  Most are Tibetan Buddhist Medical Pluralism among the Sherpa  Mix of W. biomedicine and local healing practices – homorul theory  Local healing therapists fit into three categories:
