Illness and Death November 5  th Medical Anthropologist: Cultural and physical anthropologists who study how different  cultures think and behave regarding illness health and healing Ethnomedicine: Study of health systems cross culturally  Health systems include: how people perceive health problems how they prevent disease,  diagnose it, heal disease and who can heal.  • Other health doctors aren’t looked at to heal , but a shamus so it is a individual  who can help heal spirits  • Our particular system of diagnosis is not world wide and now how other people  perceive  • Important the way people experience illness varies according to culture • Might say it is a bad spirit who caused them to get sick or bad karma • Understanding the intergration of biology and culture in different societies • Western biomedicine –emphasizes technology • Culture infuses with science • They don’t just look at western health systems but looks at our own • Notion that we tend to treat a pregnant womans body as a broken body  Culture specific Syndrome • All cultures all societies have culture specific syndromes • Health problem with sypmtoms associated with a particular culture
