Anthropology 2R03 Thursday, February-07-13 - good example of categories: food - i.e. we wouldn’t want to eat bugs, horses - very common among other cultures - Pollution Beliefs- CASTE system - hierarchy, reincarnation - universe is ordered in a hierarchy - souls are reincarnated, either upwards or not; related to karma - Brahmins (priests and scholars) - Kshatriyas (nobles and warriors) - Vaishas (merchants and artisans) - Shudras (farmers, craftspeople, labourers) - Untouchables (out-castes allocated menial work: street sweepers, cleaning latrines, tanners, skinners, gravediggers, etc.). Call themselves Dalits, which means ‘oppressed’. - ‘untouchables’ reject the system - no social interaction between castes - top of hierarchy, generally lighter skinned - a caste is made up of sub-castes - sub-castes are also ranked in a hierarchy, but not as strictly - jati = sub-castes - can marry outside of the village, but usually within jati, never outside varna - when caste s
