Anthropology 2R03 March 11, 2013 Zar Possession - Sudan, Omdurman - Largest city - Possession by Zar spirits is the key concept behind Zar possession o Behind Zar cult o Zar cult is what we could call a peripheral cult o Practiced by (mostly) women o Cult: broadly speaking, a religious belief system o Extends throughout EastAfrica (red sea and southernArabia) - Distribution of Zar (map) - African and middle Eastern name for spirit possession - Zar =African and Middle Eastern name for a type of spirit possession, the subject of several classic studies in the anthropology of belief and ritual (list of studies in slide) o Michel Leiris o Janic Boddy o AAnne Clousley o Ian M. Lewis - I.M. Lewis. 1971. Ecastatic religion:Astudy of Shamanism and Spirit Possession o Diagnosed symptoms of spirit possession o Follows stylistic conventions o Most societies have what is called a “central cult” o The most important religious system in this community o Central cult: The dominant, establishment, religion; Dominated by the extant powers in society, whatever they may be (entrepreneurs and factory owners in industrialized societies; landowners in agricultural societies; senior males in hunter-gatherer societies) Simply put, the central cult everywhere tends to reflect, validate and perpetuate the values of the more powerful and well-placed withing society  Its style is sober, serious and honorific o Central cults in their very action, claiming central ground, marginalizes some members of society I.e. Catholic church marginalizes women (women can only be nuns not priests, no way to move up in this religion) o Those who are excluded are not validated by central cult, frustration among them may build up Counter cults of their own Lewis: “peripheral cult” o Peripheral cult: Centre on popular, unofficial, ritual practices; They are expressive of the non-central roles and personae within society; Their locations of ritual practice are sited in socially marginal locations, symbolically away from the churches, mosques, and temples of the central cult. Not seen as legitimate religion o Central and peripheral cult tend to be dynamically related to each other o Peripheral cult expressive of people who are not dominant in central cult Desire for change o Sometimes peripheral cults become central cults I.e. Christianity, Islam Many central cults we know today have humble, peripheral origins  Communism was very peripheral prior to Soviet Union especially in case of Russia. When they joined Soviet Union they became strictly communism. o Peripheral cults often borrow symbol from central cult Symbols of mockery Peripheral cults sometimes major revitalization - Zar = fits common pattern of therapeutic cults worldwide: Healing cults Affliction
