Description
Anthropology 2R03 January 28, 2013 Robin Horton: “African Traditional Thought and Western Science” - Syncretism, Syncretic: mix of different religions (sometimes due to colonization) - Torso of 4-5 year old boy found o Scotland yard conclusion: witch doctor that killed little boy o “Known custom of African tradition” in papers, said to use human body parts for magic (Ignorance) o Vision of Africa that emerges that is fundamentally backward, violent, sinister and irrational o Fundamentally of a continent that is homogenous (people that inhabit it, lumping people into singular category) o Called Nelson Mendela, basically told him to tell “his people” to stop the practices o Scotland yard aware that prior to this, there were 3 human sacrifices (out of approx. a billion people) o At least 3 torsos were found in Canada last year (~30 million people). Canadians sacrifice humans now too? o View of the world that is fundamentally problematic o Child sacrifices are incredibly rare in Africa or anywhere in the world (occult/religious, extremists) o Adjectives associated: o “Africans” Primitive  Traditional  Violent  Disease  Poor/third world  Irrational  o “Europeans”/”West” Modern   Peaceful Sanitation/health (clean)  Civilized  Rational  - Evans Pritchard: first world to fundamentally say that Africans are not irrational, reasoning is logically coherent as anyone else in the world ▯ Robin Horton - Professor at University of Lagos - Anthropology department - Difference between African and Western scientific thought - Real differences: most haven’t quite grasped the concepts and differences - Anthropologists have often failed to understand African traditional thought for two main reasons: o First, many have been unfamiliar with the theoretical thinking of their own culture… and this has deprived them of a vital key to understanding o Second, even those familiar with theoretical thinking in their own cult
