Refers to the style o type of economic system, which also influences the individual. Refers to the social relations surrounding the organization of labor and ownership/control of property. When you understand who works for whom you have insights into who has more power. Although a society consists of many things other than mode of productions (culture), it is the social relationship surrounding the production of material things that determines the culture.
