Estimated 800,000 deaths and 225 million cases annually, most of them in young children in africa. 80% of deaths occur in sub-saharan africa. 4th leading cause of death in children under 5 years. Plasmodium: a multi-celled protozoan parasite spread by mosquitoes. ~ 170 species, 4 specific to humans. Has a dor(cid:373)a(cid:374)t li(cid:448)er stage (cid:894)(cid:858)hyp(cid:374)ozoites(cid:859)(cid:895) that (cid:272)a(cid:374) rea(cid:272)ti(cid:448)ate (cid:894)relapse(cid:895) (cid:272)ausi(cid:374)g disease. Has a dormant liver stage like p. vivax: malariae. Can persist sub clinically for extended periods of time (many years) Malaria or a disease resembling malaria noted for more than 4,000 years. The symptoms of malaria were described in ancient chinese medical texts ~4700 years ago (nei ching, the canon of medicine) Malaria became widely recognized in greece by the 4th century bc. In china, during the 2nd century bc, the qinghao plant (artemisia annua) was described in the medical treatise, 52 remedies, found in the mawangdui tomb.
