Document Summary

So much of the population was dependent on this vegetable that this had a very distastrous effect on the community. Late blight in potatoes is caused by the mould phytophythora infestans which ranks among the most devastating of plant pathogens. P. infestans started spreading across the world in the 19th century following the potato and reaching europe from america, and was previously seen in belgium. The blight appeared suddenly and leaving nothing, wiping out a whole crop. Therefore, the relationship between famine and infection was that the whole cause of the irish famine was due to the potato being infected by this very harmful mould. Almost half of the irish population had come to depend almost exclusively on the potato for their diet, which is why this famine had caused mass starvation throughout ireland during this devastating time period and caused millions of deaths. This particular fungus made potato plants and tubers rot.
