Has a long history that is rooted in ancient mesopotamia. Vampire accusations are leveled at people who are acting inappropriately during their life (similar to witchcraft) People who are not behaving to the norms of society. In betwixt and between; liminal beings because they don"t fit into existing models of classification. Western biomedicine: what constitutes living and dead > harvard criteria of death. Vampires seen as threatening and stress; causes a lot of debate and cultural anxiety. Vampires aren"t living or dead so they are liminal. World of fiction, hollywood and novels; some cultures do believe in vampires. Are liminal beings (we used this term in rites of passage) and are a source of stress. Prey upon humans (human blood and zombies on human flesh) Like witches, often scapegoats for social or individual crises or problems. Vampire entities appear in a variety of cultures; means of scapegoats. Romania: women accused if they failed to perform traditional women"s roles .
