Conflict free state where everyone is getting along. Refers to the varied ways in which societies maintain a conflict-free status quo. Ideal for most of the worlds societies that is never quite achieved. Different societies will have different ways of maintaining order. Order = social harmony, stability and equilibrium. Bands and tribes (small scale societies) versus states (large scale societies) The larger the population, the more difficult it is to monitor people and impose order. More mechanisms in place to control population. Therefore, larger societies impose order on people through large-scale institutions. Small scale have more informal mechanisms to keep people in line. Large scale societies regulate on norms and laws. Strict codes, regulations and rules (i. e. criminal code of canada) Systems of social control vary depending on social scale. In small-scale, face-to-face groups, social control is less formal and based only on norms.
