The oldest codiied spiritual tradiion that arose from either animism or mana. Other synonyms (but problemaic terms) witch doctor, medicine man. Shamanism a belief that there are diferent worlds that are inhabited by spirits and/or spiritual forces: can manipulate those spirits to perform tasks on your behalf, can be used for good or bad. Shaman spiritual leader who works on behalf of a community of people: oten part-ime contributors, people ask for assistance in imes of stress or crisis. Drought, death, illness: able to go into a trance or period of transformaion. Food deprivaion, excessive exercise, rhythmic drumming/dancing, drugs: communicates with spirit world and ask for guidance/help on behalf of a person, or to search for, and return, a lost soul, this allows shaman to heal. Shamanism oten coexists with modern medicine: ex. Oten found in indigenous communiies (irst peoples) Archeological evidence material possessions and architecture let behind by past socieies.
