Document Summary

Indigenous voice anthropology and ethnography / telling the story. Recognized trend in anthro that people are the best at narrating their own history, culture, customs and beliefs. This week we will listen to indigenous voices and consider the expectations of conducting cultural studies. Early colonial ethnography, post colonial ethnography, current ethnography. A commitment to holism in understanding human behaviour, rather than selecting out a single aspect of life (ex, economy) and studying it as if it existed in isolation, rather than as a part of complex lives. Holism is a catchword of ideas and meaning. In cultural anthro: holism is considered with all human being across times and places and with all dimensions of humanity (evolutionary, biophysical, socio- political, economic, cultural, psychological etc. ) That by learning enough about other people, other societies and other ways of life we are able to imagine and understand points of view that come from being in positions other than our own.
