In the study of signs and communication, three kinds of signs are often differentiated icon, indices, and symbols. This distinction is most assoc w the philosopher charles s. pierce in late 19th. Simplest since it is a pattern that physically resembles what it stands for. Pattern is close to what it is in real life. Index defined by some sensory feature: deer crossing, not directly represented.
