An epidemic occurs when a disease affects a disproportionally large number of people within a given population, such as a city or geographic region. If it affects even greater numbers and a wider area, these outbreaks are called pandemics. Smallpox causes high fevers, body aches, and a rash that develops from uid- lled bumps and scabs to permanent, pitted scars. The disease predominantly spreads through direct contact with an infected persons skin or bodily uids, but can also be spread through the air in close, con ned environments. One of the epidemics took place from 1901-1902. Lesions could also be internal (throat, etc. ) Dr. homers j. hartzell headed to the cleveland infectious disease hospital during the city"s last smallpox epidemic, 1901-1902. Hartzell kept a personal photographic log of the epidemic. Wwi spiralled to a close, the estimated death toll reached 37m worldwide. Millions of soldiers returning home spread the disease.
