The phenomenon whereby an individual with an attribute, which is deeply discredited is rejected as a result of the attribute. Stigma is a process by which the reaction of others spoils normal identity. Social sciences have talked of stigma for many years and looked at its diversity- attempts to understand holistically- since 1960s. Stigma- book- cited in many works- how people experience in their everyday: brought it on disability and disease and the isolation and goffman, attribute and behaviour and reputation that they assume and socially discredited. Classified as undesirable and rejected because of their difference. Social interaction dictation and cultural backgrounds- how stigma created an reinforced (stigma can only occur through interaction) Oversimplification- create us and them- hetero vs. homosexual, young and old. Biomedical does not deal with this because subjective and individualistic. Defining stigma: refers to negative associations with certain deviations from the norm. Affixes to an individual"s identity: often leads to social alienation and societal exclusion.
