Art history: is based on facts, aims at interpretation and tries to work with facts (from history). Criticism: offers an evaluation that can be subjective. Criticism is a serious operation, its not a question of liking or disliking something, its part of how we consume and perceive images. Art history is tied to this because very often it finds itself engaged with something that has undergone criticism. Modern art/abstraction people began engaging more heavenly in criticism. It got a lot of praise from a certain groups of critics. This painting found its place in history. The critical operation created a place for its work and predetermined its place in art history. But to better understand the painting we should look at other painting at the time. Some people talked about this on pure formal terms (formalists), others saw it as a symbol of its time, a perfect example of fighting against anxiety of ww2.
