Relationship between antiquity and modernity: classical tradition in western art. We make monuments to elevate our lives: greek art and architecture is still with us. The very core of the art and architectural language in western culture. What is archaeology: archaeology is scientific study of material remains of past cultures. Inquiry into the past focusing on physical artifacts = collectively, material culture. Employs scientific methods used to identify and classify objects into like categories: establish relationships between different / related objects. This helps us understand changes across time and across geography. Attempts to reconstruct specifics of ancient civilization through determining the use of artifacts within the specific culture. Understand an object aesthetic appeal, but also its use to that particular society / culture. How the people thought about that object and how they would used it.
