Masaccio trinity with the virgin, st. john the evangeslist, and donors 1426. Mural painting (wall painting: church of santa maria novella. Commissioned to paint this painting on the side walls of a church in florence. 1426 is the date that the lenzi family completed their tombstone in front of this fresco: this fresco connects to the tombstone of the lenzi family. Evangelist: these three figures create a triangle pyramidal composition. This makes the work visually clear and easy to read. In the bottom of the painting, there is a painting of a skeleton laid out on a tomb with a quote. What i am, you will be. : this reminds those that come to the church of the promise of life after death. It is also important to remember the plagues that occurred in italy during the 15th and 16th century. Masaccio pulls in the catholic belief that life after death is directly related to christ"s body.
