Nov. 2 – 2B03 02/11/2011 9:30:00 AM GUEST LECTURE – THE LARGE HADRON COLLIDER Accelerator being built near Geneva  A long time coming. All about falsifying theories. Standard Model – main paradigm for particle physics What is it?  Take particles and shoot them down a tube.  An enormous machine, located underground.  Protons collide by going both ways across the circle.  7000 GEV/proton  Going really fast - almost at the speed of light?  First scene of Angels and Demons – antimatter created @ CERN  Challenges to LHC – 1) particles invisibles o 2) Particles decay really fast o You have to take what you have (all the normal boring particles) and infer what they came from  Did not work. Thousands of magnets, and all super-connecting. Problem was that magnets did not connect properly at “the incident.” o Worked for a couple days, but then broke. o Didn’t replace them all, only some of the magnets that had bad wells.  Table – only fixed the red ones, not the blue ones.  The plan now -> to run @ half the speed.  What they are finding?
