Document Summary
Biochem 4m03 lecture 23 early life metabolic regulation i. There are signals, or cues or information being transmitted through the mother telling the fetus what kind of environment is happening right now so fetus can predict it. Some signals might not be accurate where disease risks arises. Changes during pregnancy: signals (endocrine signals) that mediate metabolic changes in mother. Metabolic changes, cardiovascular changes, endocrine changes, musculoskeletal changes, neurological changes. Duration: ~266-280 days = 38-40 weeks after the first day of the last menstrual period. Most changes are progressive and are attribute to changes in hormonal responses. Pregnancy is divided into trimesters (of ~3 months of duration: 1st trimester: first sign of pregnancy is cessation of menses, by 8-10 weeks fetal heart beat. All fetal growth (majority) occurs in 3rd trimester. Metabolic changes in the mother are required to: Placenta consumes about 50% of energy mother receives. Mother has metabolic demand as well as another organism.
