Use of antidepressants during pregnancy: is there a risk of adverse metabolic outcomes. Mental illness results in more disability in developed countries than any other group of illnesses, including cancer and heart disease. The most common mental illnesses in adults are anxiety and mood disorders. This data is from 2006 but it hasn"t decreased. 20% of canadians will experience a mental illness in their lifetime. 4. 7% of canadians aged 15 and older met the criteria for a major depressive episode in the past 12 months. Approximately 8% of adults will experience major depression at some time in their lives. Lifetime occurrence of major depressive disorder is sex dependent. The prevalence of depression in women of childbearing age (above right graph: women are twice as likely as men to experience major depressive disorder (21. 3% vs. 12. 7%) Pregnancy appears to be a window of vulnerability for the exacerbation of existing depression and the development of new disease.
