BIOCHEM 4M03 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Stereospecificity, Dinitrophenol, Thiolase
Document Summary
Biochem 4m03 lecture 5 fatty acid oxidation. Theme: follow a fatty acid from the circulation across the plasma membrane and into the mitochondria for complete oxidation and atp production. Specific topics: regulation of plasma membrane fatty acid uptake, regulation of mitochondrial fatty acid uptake, beta oxidation and tca cycle, electron transport chain, ketogenesis. Different chain lengths can range from 4-24 carbons in length but primarily 16 or 18. Saturated fat vs. monounsaturated vs. polyunsaturated vs. trans fat. The differences depend on where the double bond is, how many double bonds there are, and whether it is a cis or trans bond. Structure is function within a cell membrane. Fatty acids are also a vital fuel source. Used to be thought that fa diffuse into cell but now shown some protein-mediated activity (protein mediated fatty acid transport) Fa circulates bound to albumin: 6 binding sites for fa on albumin, long chain fa in association with albumin.
