Document Summary

Cells dividing for growth, development and repair. Chromosomes move to opposite poles during cell division. Chromosome during metaphase attached to kinetochores (either side of centromere) Form cage-like network, interdigitating the opening of the cell. Fluorescent dyes to distinguish between the kinetochore microtubules but the non- kinetochore microtubules aren"t labelled. Start of anaphase centromere region, chromosomes moved apart and have bleached the dyes used (didn"t cut the kinetochore microtubules) *compare either side of the bleached out section. Result bleached section was visible, but distance between chromosomes and bleached section was reduced (smaller compared to unbleached region) At kinetochore region, chromosome moves over spindle fibre. Cell breaks down spindle fibre, reducing the distance. Chromosomes in interphase cell condense, signalling start of metaphase. Experiments are not for understanding the sequence of mitosis. Metaphase cytoplasm and interphase cytoplasm inject cytoplasm from metaphase cell into one frog oocyte and cytoplasm from interphase cells to another frog oocyte. One or both frog oocytes will begin metaphase.
