Description
Introductory Lecture What is a cell?  An autonomous biological unit (smallest unit of life)  Basic structural, functional and biological unit of all living organisms Classification of living organisms: Eukaryotes or Prokaryotes Prokaryotes  Single celled bacteria and cyanobacteria  Simple internal organization  Single closed compartment surrounded by 1 or 2 plasma membranes  Nucleoid consists of single circular DNA membrane and isn’t enclosed by it’s own membrane  Reproduced through a simplified cell division (fission)  May be unicellular or exist as colonies  Fission Reproduction-dividing eubacteria Colony of archeabacteria Eukaryotes  Compromise all multi-cellular plants and animals o Ex. Fungi (multicellular bacteria and unicellular yeast) o Protozoans (unicellular)  Complex internal organization s o Contain a membrane-bound nucleus w/ most of cell’s genetic material o “eu” –true, “karyotes”- nucleus  Activities are compartmentalized, extensive internal membrane holds various compartments (organelles) Single Purkinje Neuron Cell- RBC/WBC/Platelets
