Description
October 24 , 2012 Biology 2F03: Fundamental and Applied Ecology Competition (3) Question - what is the link between the niche of a species and its morphology Body size and seed size - are correlated - here, frequency of large seeds consumed increases with beak size - hardness of seeds consumed also increases with beak size Seed depletion and average seed hardness - supply of soft seed changes over time - low seed numbers due to drought caused a shift in consumption and back - side effects:  drought  finch  feeding  plant reproduction Selection for larger body size during drought - weak beaks die out, big ones survive on - here, competition modulates body size in a population Question - if carrying capacities differ among species, what consequences that may have for their numbers/densities Population growth and K densities - Gause experimented with paramecium - when grown separately, max density depends on food alone; although the species differ - maximum density: carrying capacity, K but when together Question - is competitive superiority fixed for any pair of species that we compare - what may affect it Populations of Tribolium confusm and T. castaneu
