September 12 , 2012 Biology 2F03: Fundamental and Applied Ecology Life on Land (2) Rain forest: life on trees - tropical rain forest canopy (high branches) are covered by many plants, including shrubs, mosses, and herbs - ferns, bromeliads and orchids are common - nutrients are from air or animals - Kilimanjaro slopes: curtains of epithylites Tropical dry forest: distribution - between savannahs and rain forest - Bombay, India - Wet and dry seasons; greater variation in temp and water Question - which is the favoured biome used by people: dry>moist>very dry>wet>rain People and forests in tropics - great differences in density - great differences in tempo of damage - wet forest catches up, though (red Madagascar or Rondonia (Brazil) on the Internet) Desert: distribution - rain shadow Himalayas - lowest mean precipitation; drought is year-round; lithosoils (rock fragments) Mediterranean - small - low mean precipitation; drought during the summer Islands on land - affect climate based patterns - mountains affect regional climate - three main features:  orientation: plate tectonics  compressed physical gradient conditions  isolation
