Herbivores will not forage as often if there are many predators around- this changes their growth rate & alters their life history. All different design criteria (functional things organisms are doing, such as dispersal (which is in fact an adaptation), foraging, etc. ) must be integrated to create most efficient design to maximize interface into niche. & resource acquisition & minimize mortality rate & maximize reproductive output. Plate morphology (reef) (for maneuverability) versus plank morphology (reeds) (for speed) among fish. For any given unavoidable liability, life will adapt to best make it an asset. For any given adaptive solution, life will explore it in diverse ways & integrate it into other features of the adaptive suite.
