Affects sinuses, lungs, skin, liver, pancreas (blocked ducts prevent release of digestive enzymes), intestines (inability to absorb nutrients, dehydrated), and reproductive organs (blocked or under developed ducts) In amed airways, thick with mucus, bacterial infection, blood in mucus. Goblet cells secrete mucus which traps any dust particles and bacteria. Cilia work with goblet cells, sweeping the mucus across the surface. Cilia mobility and ow push mucus up and out of the trachea. Airway surface liquid should have adequate volume to allow rhythmic ciliary beating and allow for mucociliary transport. Cftr gene was discovered in 1989 at sick kids by francis colins, lep-chee-tsui and jack. Translation via er-bound ribosomes; folding with chaperone assistance. Protein transported to the apical membrane of cells lining in the airways. Facilitates the transport of chloride ions across membranes (controlling transport of sodium)
