Interphase: g0 phase pause in the cell cycle, g1 phase prepares the cell for dna synthesis, s-phase dna synthesis, g2 phase prepares the cell for mitosis. M-phase: mitosis and cytokinesis occurs, walther flemming identified the stages by staining developing salamander embryos. Metaphase: alignment of chromosomes at the center of the cell in a region identified as the metaphase plate, separase removes glue protein (cohesion) that is between chromosomes to separate chromosomes to enter into anaphase. Telophase: two new daughter nuclei form in the cell, chromosomes begin to decondense, spindle microtubules are depolymerized (or are broken down, cell is ready for division. Note: once stem cells stop dividing (after proliferative) they begin to differentiate and specialize, phosphatase degrades phosphates on target proteins allowing the chromosome to unwind.
