Document Summary

Dna is anchored to the plasma membrane and the cell elongates until the two dna attachment sites are at opposite ends of the cell. In eukaryotic cells, cell division allows a unicellular fertilized egg to develop into a complex multicellular cell. Early embryos contain stem cells that are able to become specialized and reproduce indefinitely. Adults also have stem cells but they are not able to become any type of cell, but instead replace non-reproducing specialized cells. E. g. : the adult skeletal muscle has very little cell division, however in injury, satellite stem cells that are present in the basement membrane of the muscle tissue become activated and divide to enable muscle regeneration. Interphase consists of the s phase and 2 growth phases, g1 and g2. M phase consists of mitosis and cytokinesis: during interphase, cells replicate the dna in the nucleus (during the s phase).
