Document Summary
Gene duplications over evolutionary time, as do so can lead to families of related genes w often related biochemical fns (slightly diff, but related) Mutations promote diversification of gene family members (good/bad) Families can expand & contract over time. Hemoglobin: 4 kinds of polypeptides, 2/4 kinds of polypeptides. Alpha-globin (11) & beta-globin (chromosome: gamma beta globin: fetus, ebryo, adult is & , accident exchange in duplication (duplication in 2 events) 200 my: single copy of globin gene to 2 (adult/fetal) 40my: differentiation in different adult: mapped to speciation. Why do we keep duplication: they"re expressed, transcribed at diff times, additional characteristics to take into consideration, 1 primary alpha-globin, transcribed through lifetime, beta-globin: first embryo transcribed, lots early, then goes down. As it goes down, gamma (fetal) increases (6 weeks before birth) As it goes down, adult beta globin increases (but starts to be used a little after 6 weeks of age)
