Cell theory: cells are derived from pre-exisiting cells. Both are developments unified by ancestry & decendants (represented by phylogenetic trees) All living organisms share 5 charactieristics: made up of 1+ membrane bound units called cells, store & process information that"s heritable, they replicate (reproduce, as populations they evolve. This leads to a change in allele frequency: they use energy. Cell: highly organized compartment bounded by plasma membrane that contains concentrated chemicals in aqueous solutions (all have plasma membrane) Agents that infects cell uses cellular machinery of host cell to reproduce. Can only store/transmit info if attached to host cell. Prediction: something that can be measured & must be correct to produce hypothesis. Every cell is derived from preexisting cells so all are somehow related by common ancestry. Evolution: postulates that a)species are related, b)species can change through time. Natural selection: process that explains how evolution occurs. Fitness: ability of an individual to produce offspring.
